Tooth loss is a much more prevalent problem than most of us realize. Estimates say as many as 120 million people have at least one missing teeth, and 36 million have no teeth. And tooth loss doesn’t just affect the older generation, and we see patients as early as their twenties who are experiencing tooth loss.
Here at Front Range Smiles, we focus on solutions, and we offer dental implants for patients in Parker and Aurora who want to replace missing teeth. Patients appreciate implants because they restore the beauty and function of their smile; Dr. Schmidt recommends dental implants because they are the replacement that is the next best thing to a natural tooth.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
A dental implant is an innovative tooth replacement that consists of three pieces: an implant post, an abutment, and the tooth restoration. We can use tooth implants to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth.
Placing Your Dental Implant
The first step is to determine if you’re a good candidate, and Dr. Schmidt does this by performing a thorough exam and taking x-rays. If you are, we will schedule an appointment with our dental implant dentist so she can place the implant post in your jawbone. Dr. Schmidt performs the procedure under local anesthesia at our comfortable Parker dental office. Placing a dental implant is a very straightforward procedure, and our patients report little or no discomfort afterward.
The Healing Period
Next comes the healing period where the biocompatible titanium implant fuses with surrounding bone and tissue. This process is called osseointegration and takes anywhere from 3-6 months to complete. Once it heals in place, the implant resumes the function of the lost tooth root, stimulating healthy bone regeneration, and acting as a base for a dental restoration.
Restoring Your Dental Implant
Dr. Schmidt attaches a small piece called an abutment that connects the implant post to the restoration we will place on it. The restoration is the part of the implant you can see when you smile, and if we are replacing a single tooth, we will use a dental crown. For multiple teeth, we recommend a bridge or partial denture, and if you are missing all your upper or lower teeth, we will place a full denture.
Implants Help Maintain a Youthful Facial Appearance
One of the benefits of tooth implants that many people aren’t aware of is that they help promote healthy bone regeneration in your jaw. This is crucial because as soon as you lose a tooth, the jawbone begins to atrophy and shrink. A dental implant takes up the job of a lost tooth root to keep your jaw strong and healthy.
Having a dental implant has aesthetic benefits too. Jawbone loss changes the contours of your face and leads to a sunken appearance. With a dental implant in place, bone loss is no longer a problem, which gives your face has a fuller, more youthful appearance.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Anyone with missing teeth may be a candidate, and the criteria are that you are healthy enough for oral surgery, and there is sufficient dense jawbone into which Dr. Schmidt can place the implant. The first step is to call Front Range Smiles to schedule an appointment.
