At Front Range Smiles, we provide all the tools you need to achieve and maintain a healthy smile. However, if you are too anxious about dental visits to make an appointment, you may be relieved to find out that we offer sedation dentistry. Avoiding the dentist altogether can cause your oral health to suffer and lead to problems like decay and gum disease.
We know that dental anxiety is a problem that prevents millions of people from seeking the routine dentistry they need, but excellent oral health is crucial, and we want to help you. You will find that Dr. Amber Schmidt is a very caring and compassionate dentist in Parker, and our dental team strives to make your visits comfortable and pleasant.
Even so, many of our patients appreciate that we also offer sedation dentistry to help them relax and have the most stress-free dental appointment possible.
Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?
Everyone has their unique reasons for dental anxiety. In some cases, it is the result of an unpleasant experience in childhood. Other patients get nervous about the sounds or smells of a dental office or fear injections.
Sedation dentistry can benefit you if you:
- Have high anxiety or fear about dental visits
- Have trouble getting numb
- Hate needles
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Have sensitive teeth
- Require extensive dental work during one appointment
- Have had a traumatic dental experience in the past
- Cannot keep your mouth open for extended periods
Sedation Dentistry Tailored for Your Unique Needs
Because everyone is unique and has different levels of anxiety, Dr. Schmidt offers two types of sedation dentistry for her Parker, CO patients. She will speak to you about your concerns and then recommend the approach that is right for you.
Minimal Sedation with Nitrous Oxide
You have probably heard nitrous oxide referred to as "laughing gas" because of the happy, pleasant feelings it produces. While you won't break out in hysterical laughter, you will feel very relaxed and have a strong sense of comfort and well-being.
Nitrous oxide is a gas that you inhale through a small nasal mask, and as you do, you quickly start to feel the relaxing effects take hold. Our dental team monitors you carefully throughout your appointment to ensure that the amount of nitrous you receive is just enough to keep you calm and comfortable.
When your treatment is finished, we'll have you inhale pure oxygen for several minutes as the effects of nitrous oxide wear off. You will leave our Parker dental office feeling relaxed and refreshed and able to drive yourself home safely from your appointment.
Moderate Oral Conscious Sedation
Many patients can benefit from a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide provides. If this is the case for you, Dr. Schmidt will prescribe an oral sedative for you to take at home, about an hour before your appointment. By the time you get to our dental office with the help of a friend or family member, you will already feel calm and relaxed.
Oral conscious sedation allows you to remain calm and comfortable throughout your appointment, and you may even drift off. But you will remain conscious, and we can easily awaken you if we need to communicate with you. It will take several hours for the effects of the sedative to wear off, so you will need a driver to pick you up from our appointment.
